INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NAVIGATING THE IDEA OF THE INDO-PACIFIC: INDIAN AND SOUTHEAST ASIAN PERSPECTIVES

WELCOME TO NIPSEA 2019 | MADURAI KAMARAJ UNIVERSITY

About the Conference

The era of ‘’Atlantic Age’’ in the World History seems to have ended; rather in this fin de siècle, the Pacific is said to have attained the status of ‘ocean of the future’. For over five centuries, the Atlantic Ocean was the bedrock of various empire building endeavours, theatre of two successive World Wars and of course an unprecedented Cold War manoeuvres. The supposed transoceanic shift from west to east has kindled a flurry of frenetic speculations on the nature of change of currents in the World History. However, it has been argued that the idea of Pacific or Pacific Community is not a twenty-first century phenomenon; rather the “’internationalizing the Pacific’’ had indeed been visualized and institutionalized in the interwar period of 1920s itself. Indeed, it had its genealogical germination in the Imperial Japan’s geopolitical narratives on “’the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere”.

In this context, this conference intends to explore the emerging contours of the ideology of Indo-Pacific in all its manifestations.
